Ibiza is home to iconic buildings that reflect the history and culture of the island, spanning from the Phoenician era to the present day. Among fortresses, churches, and modern constructions, we can enjoy a unique blend of architectural styles that will effortlessly captivate us.

One of the most iconic buildings on the island is the Cathedral of Santa María de las Nieves, located at the top of Dalt Vila, the walled city declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 13th century over an old mosque, the cathedral blends Gothic and Baroque styles and offers unparalleled views of the island and the Mediterranean Sea. Inside, we find valuable sacred artworks and an image of the Virgen de las Nieves (Virgin of the Snows), the patron saint of Ibiza.

Another remarkable construction is the Ibiza Castle, a medieval fortress located in Dalt Vila. For centuries, it served as protection against invasions and pirates. Its structure has been restored, and today, it houses the Parador de Turismo, in addition to offering historical tours where visitors can learn about the military and political evolution of the island.

Also within the historic centre of Ibiza, specifically in the Sala de Armas and Prova warehouses, we find the Ibiza Museum of Contemporary Art, which was inaugurated by the City Council in 1969, following the success of the First Ibiza Biennale in 1964.

The next notable landmark is in Sant Antoni de Portmany: the Far de ses Coves Blanques. This lighthouse, dating back to 1897, ceased operation in the 1960s and today serves as a cultural and exhibition centre. Its location on a cliff with sea views makes it a perfect spot to enjoy sunsets.

When it comes to religious architecture, in the historic centre of Sant Carles de Peralta, we find the church of the same name, dedicated to Saint Charles. It is in the white Ibizan style, built in the 18th century, and its simplicity and solidity reflect the tradition of fortified churches on the island, which were also meant to protect inhabitants from pirate attacks.

Also within religious architecture, we find the Church of Santa Eulària, located in Puig de Missa. It is one of the fortress-churches built on the island for protection against attacks from Turkish and North African corsairs and stands atop a hill visible from afar, with a few houses at its base.

These are vestiges of different eras that have shaped the identity of the island. Every corner tells a story and reveals the cultural richness that has endured through the centuries.
